well for me its been all through experimenting. I've tried different ways this year. but I'm finding I'm getting the best results with the least amount of time.

well to be honest only this year I think I have found the style/technique I feel most comfortable with.
I can't say I've used gimp. I do really like Photoshop. I've tried painter, but I find I miss the editing power that photoshop has. But do whats most comfortable for you(if it works, then it doesn't matter what program or technique you use!)
But this also me hitting pause sometimes to think about it... getting coffee... surfing and emailing. I think 3 hrs real time with that in mind.
