@03:40hey man if it works it works... Cut tecnique I still use now and then... robots are perfect for that!

well for me its been all through experimenting. I've tried different ways this year. but I'm finding I'm getting the best results with the least amount of time.

but explore!
acutally these videos have helped me get quicker at painting.

yeah I'm all for finding your own style!
be unique and find whats comfortable for you.

well to be honest only this year I think I have found the style/technique I feel most comfortable with.

I can't say I've used gimp. I do really like Photoshop. I've tried painter, but I find I miss the editing power that photoshop has. But do whats most comfortable for you(if it works, then it doesn't matter what program or technique you use!)

:iconfranchesco: Franchesco last month talked to me about doing a collab(to colour his fantastic line work) All I can tell you I was felt so honoured and freaked out about it (well I love Franchesco's art.. so I was nervous as heck).

But last month I was swamped with work and wasn't able to touch it until yesterday.

Just a little back story.
I first layed eyes on Franchesco's art on She-Dragon special by Image comics. I think this might have been in 06 or 05.
After buying the comic, I jumped on my computer to find out who this guy was cause I wanted to see more of this fantastic work!
I found nothing... until 09, I had found him on DA.

After finding him and more of his work... I also found out how cool he is after sending a couple of message and notes.

But I'd like to Thank Franchesco for asking me to colour his work... It was a thrill!

@03:40quick question:

having shaded in grayscale, how is the colour applied?

I'm guessing:

new layer above the grayscale, 50% opacity, 'normal' blending mode, brush?

or is that waaaay out?

@03:40Oh I use different blend modes. I can say I have a rule of thumb of which blendmode I use... sometimes it's overlay, sometimes it's soft, sometimes it's color. If you catch the video.. sometimes you just see flashes of colour andthatsjust me flicking through the colour modes trying to find the best colour, that works with the best value range too. (sometimes thats tricky.. like for eve's skin colour.. I used two layers, each layer with a different blend mode... so combined they gave me the best colour and best value range).
and I do use opacity combined with whatever blend mode.

@03:40ok cool - i'm interested in trying some colouring using grayscale shading, 'cos normally I'm a flats/cuts/render kind of guy. But I've seen you and a few other artists get some really amazing results with the consistency that this method seems to offer. I guess I'll experiment with a few of those blending modes you mentioned. thanks :)

@03:40ahh yes I used to be a cuts person myself.. way back in the 90's before wacom's were affordable.
yeah I tend to be a step by step person. I find it too time consuming to think colour and form at the same time.. and it ends up being sloppy half the time.

@03:40lol I am behind the times a bit but I still kinda like my retro comic-industry colouring techniques!

I think you're right about your method though, the number of times I've been asked to produced an additional grayscale version of a piece and found that a desaturated version of the coloured piece (rather than a separately rendered stage of the colouring process, as per your technique) just has no pop without the colours, and can't really stand up well on its own.
